A massive new Monument discovered at Petra is almost 2150 years old
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra in Jordan is famous not only for its archaeological value, but as the magnificent backdrop for famous movies like Indiana Jones series, Sinbad and more recently, Transformers, Revenge of the fallen. The grandeur of Petra is renowned for its famous rock cut architecture dating back to 312 BC. Petra is now back in the news for revealing to archaeologists, another majestic wonder that lay before their very eyes, yet remained undiscovered till today.
A new monument discovered at Petra is making waves in the archaeological world because it could well be 2150 years old.
1 Petra Now One of the Wonders of the World
Petra has been the site of excavation for over two centuries and even now new discoveries are being made, which is fascinating the science world. Discovered by state of the art satellite imagery, archeologists from National Geographic, and the council of American Overseas research, Sarah Parcak and Christopher Tuttle, used drone photography to pinpoint the monument’s exact location and determine details about its surrounding structure.
The age of the site was determined by pottery strewn around the site, which proved to be 2150 years old. The new monument, twice the width of an Olympic swimming pool was discovered, just 800 meters south of the excavated city of Petra which in 2007 was named one of the new wonders of the world.
